HEAD of SUBJECT AREA
The role of Head of Subject area is a next step in development of Faculty, to reinforce the position given the development of the university, in particular the line management of the staff in the subject area, the development of research and the need to implement a focused professional development policy.
Course Leaders are responsible for the Student Experience whereas the Heads of Subject Areas are responsible for the Academic Development of the subject and its modules, including the supervision of Staff and the development of scholarship and research.
The following are the responsibilities of Head of Subject Area
HEAD of SUBJECT AREA
In consultation with the relevant Faculty Dean
- People Management
- To be the line manager of the staff assigned by the Dean to the Subject Area and to report via the Deputy Dean on Teaching about the overall performance of staff members
- Be an active member of the Faculty and contribute to the overall leadership and management of the Faculty:
- Ensure that University HR policies and procedures are implemented
- Ensure that staff performance is managed appropriately and that fair workload allocation processes are in place based on a workload policy (subject to Executive decision)
- Ensure all staff have access to the necessary support to enable them to contribute fully and develop their skills and experience
- To provide the initial rationale for staff vacancies to be discussed by FMT.
- make effective use of all staffing resources and seek opportunities for collaboration and joint working with others beyond the department and beyond the Faculty
- Quality Assurance
- Comply with auditing, quality assurance (peer-scrutiny) and monitoring procedures both internal and external
- To ensure that the ML understand the QA requirements for the module and has planned the teaching and learning process.
- Ensure all activities are carried out to the highest possible standards and put in place the necessary evaluation and monitoring procedures to ensure both compliance and improvement: such procedures will include teaching, research and management of all resources
- Research and Scholarly development
- To ensure that ML and colleagues in the subject area are actively engaged in scholarly activities
- To engage staff in the promotion and production of scholarly and research activities
- Ensure the highest levels of quality, integrity and ethics in all research undertaken
- To assist the Dean of Research in the assessment and recording of research activities and KPI in the subject area
Person Specification
Qualifications.
- Candidates are expected to hold a higher degree, preferably a PhD and/or relevant professional qualification, preferably from an international institute of Higher Education HE.
- Candidates should be fluent in English either with 6.5 IELTS or a subject qualification taught and assessed in English as per the policy on Academic staff.
Experience.
- An understanding of the requirements for teaching in H.E. in an international environment.
- A specialist interest and output in teaching and research
- Evidence of an understanding of Quality Enhancement process and the application to educational processes
- Evidence of an understanding of Professional Development requirements and delivery for Academic staff
- Evidence of policy formulation and execution
- Evidence of managing people or in a position of influence and leadership
- Excellent writing and reporting skills
- Evidence of good interpersonal skills, including presentation and communication skills
- Appropriate level of computer literacy.
Aptitudes, abilities, skills and personal qualities
- The applicants will need to demonstrate their commitment, flexibility, passion and enthusiasm for the subject area.
- Willingness to learn and adapt, to be proactive as well as responsive to the needs of the University and its community of scholars, students and staff.
- Open and engaging to contemporary developments in Higher Education and a passion to stretch the boundaries of teaching quality
CONDITIONS AND APPOINTMENT PROCESS
The Head of Subject Area will be a part of Faculty Leadership on the scale 16 in staff list, subject to the following conditions:
- All Heads of Subject Areas will report via the Deputy Dean on Teaching to the Dean
- The appointment will be for 5 years, an appropriate professional contract will be signed with the successful candidate;
- Heads of Subject Area will have to reapply for their position, if they wish to do so, after 5 years.
- If Heads of Subject Areas wish to resign their responsibilities or are not reappointed, then they will be placed on the appropriate lecturer scale.
Appointments to vacant position will be based on a competitive selection process as follows:
- A call for Applications
- A completed University Application form has to be completed by each candidate
- An interview chair 1st DR/Dean/FMT
- Recommendation for appointment to the Rector.
On appointment
- Review after 2 semesters in post
- The review will consider the performance of the colleague and recommend
- the continuation for a further 2 years or
- that the colleagues improves over the following semester or
- resigns
- If a colleague does not fulfill the review conditions then they will be placed back to the grade from which they were appointed
