Senior Build Engineer (Operations Engineer / Release Engineer)

As our Senior Build & Release Engineer, you will coordinate with multiple development groups on build packaging requirements and release protocols, consult with developers to evaluate their needs, identify operating procedures, and evaluate existing or new systems to deliver our business requirements via efficient and effective build and release policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the release process end-to-end, from the planning of release content through to actual release deployment to production. Plan the deployment of software releases of products and in-house applications.

• Maintain the current change management process for documenting software releases while actively championing and evolving the process to support release management.

• Maintain current version control systems (Subversion and Git). This includes user maintenance as well as establishing the appropriate folder structure and branches for releases. Create and maintain version directories and manage release branching.

• Write and maintain written procedures for release management. Configure and implement automated tools and/or manual processes that integrate the Release Management function with other ITIL processes, working individually or as part of a team.

• Control the releases, defined as the combination of versions of all software, in-house and purchased, which have passed the testing series and are certified as working correctly together.

• Control the version migration process as each version moves through the development and testing process. Develop a strategy to identify post-release traceability through versioning, release notes, etc. for troubleshooting purposes.

• Validate binaries for custom Java developments as necessary. Move report files and non-database code to the production environment.

• Work with extended team to prioritize and scope scheduled releases with completion dates for each phase. Monitor progress of phases by employing appropriate metrics and management reporting. Facilitate all release meetings.

• Plan and support test migrations and production deployments. Support deployments across multiple environments through coordination with internal development and project management teams.

• Work with other technical team members to resolve any configuration and release-related issues.

• Provide input to the QA function when planning the release process; and assists with the planning and support of user acceptance testing (UAT), creation of test plans, test data sets and automated testing to ensure all components of the system meet specifications. Develop and use automated test scripts. Perform some hands-on testing.

• Ensure completion of operational and technical documentation prior to software release for each application. Gather necessary release notes and user guides prior to releasing into production.

• Drive continuous improvement through trend reporting analysis and metrics management.

• Work flexible hours to avoid impact to production systems. Ability to work flexible hours, 24/7 support may be required on occasion.

• Develop and document test plans, test cases, SQL scripts and automation scripts based on user requirements, condition data as required

• Document and execute regression, functional, and integration tests

• Document and track software failures using Jira and/or similar tools

• Work with developers and QA team members to resolve outstanding bugs

• Participate in after-hours and off-peak outage windows to provide certification and testing support

• Support ongoing work to automate and document QA regression testing

Requirements:

• 5+ years in build and release management acting as a lead or manager in an operations-centric environment. Preferably in an organization developing client-based applications.

• Knowledge of SCM and continuous integration systems (Jenkins, TeamCity, Bamboo)

• Hands-on knowledge of scripting (UNIX shell, Perl, Python, Windows batch files and PowerShell)

• Windows Installer (MSI) expertise, knowledge of web applications deployment

• 2-5 years of software development experience (Java/.NET)

• Knowledge of Configuration Management industry standards and best practices

• Knowledge of Agile Iterative Development best practices and software development lifecycles

• Knowledge of JIRA tracking systems for administration.
